Message from the Law Student Liaison

Welcome to the Law Student page of the ABA Section of State and Local Government Law website!I’m so glad you found us and hope you’ll join us on Facebook, too! As the Section’s national law student liaison, my job is to listen to both law studentsand Section leaders, to identify mutual needs and to create win-win opportunities to address those needs. This year, I want to help you:

·         BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK—NOW

Instead of worrying about things you can’t control—like the economy— start building relationships! First, when joining or renewing your ABA student membership, sign up for our section—it’s free!  Once you’re a member, consider listing your membership on your resume, explore the idea ofjoining a committee, and make plans to join us in person at a networking reception at any of our quarterly meetings! We’ll be visiting Tucson, AZ; New Orleans, LA; and Washington. D.C. before the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

·         GET PUBLISHED—WITH THE HELP OF AN ESTABLISHED ATTORNEY

The idea of submitting an academic work for publication can be extremely intimidating—but with the Section of State & Local Government Law, it doesn’t have to be! Whether you are interested in helping an established attorney conduct research and edit, or if you are looking for a local government lawyer to provide guidance and feedback on your work, the Section, which publishes the Urban Lawyer, is here to help!  The Section will also have a special publication & presentation opportunity available in the fall of 2012 for students interested in developing a publication addressing Urban Education.

·         STAY INVOLVEDFOR FREE—AFTER GRADUATION

While law students receive free membership, a little thing called ‘dues’ becomes due after graduation—but don’t fret! The Section is frequently able to provide an additional free year of membership to newly minted lawyers.  Considering that yours plan may change post- graduation, staying connected is key.

If you have questions, suggestions, or would like more information, please contact me at nrb10f@fsu.edu. I hope to hear from you!
