Beyond the Ethics of Web 2.0 - What's Now, What's Next, What If.

Thursday, March 25, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

As policymakers apply 19th century ideas to 20th century marketing techniques, lawyers are using 21st century strategies to improve their client development. This workshop looks at the use of social networking and social media – as well as participation in virtual worlds – to examine the state of the lawyer’s professional obligations and ethical compliance. Topics include: 1. The scope of the rules that govern law firm marketing; 2. Current rules and recent ethics opinions on tech-based marketing; 3. Applications to, and conjecture about, the ethics of blogging, advertising on YouTube, participating in social networking sites and consumer forums and tweeting; 4. Ideas about the future of online marketing and its regulation. Those attending will gain an understanding of how to use the Internet to maximize their client development in ways that are consistent with the rules of professional conduct and be positioned to analyze the application of those rules to future technological applications.
