Expert Analysis of Noteworthy Federal Circuit Cases
The Media Alerts Federal Courts of Appeals Project provides reporters, lawyers, educators, and the public with accurate, unbiased analysis of newsworthy and legally significant cases pending in or decided by the federal courts of appeals.
The news media provides extensive coverage of U.S. Supreme Court cases, but the decisions of the federal appellate courts, which can affect the lives of millions of people, often go unreported. To enhance public awareness about the role and importance of the federal appellate courts, the ABA Standing Committee on Federal Judicial Improvements (SCFJI) instituted the Media Alerts Project on Federal Courts of Appeals. SCFJI unveiled its Media Alerts website at the First Amendment Center in Washington, D.C., on November 18, 2009.
The federal appellate court system is comprised of twelve regional circuit courts of appeals—the First through Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals, as well as a District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals—and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, a court for patent and other specialized appeals. These courts are the intermediary decision-makers between the federal trial level courts and the United States Supreme Court. They hear appeals from federal district courts and federal administrative agencies. Media Alerts cases are selected and summarized by distinguished law professors and their students.
