Welcome from James and Karen

Bar members, you are invited to step back into cinematic history at the legendary Biltmore Millennium in Los Angeles California for the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division and National Solo & Small Firm Day Conference and the Young Lawyers Institute on October 15 to October 17, 2009.  The Biltmore Millennium is the home of the Academy Awards -- the Oscar and is situated in downtown Los Angeles, California.  It is the exceptionally nostalgic and original, it is also the site of over 200 movies, including Cocoon, Ghost Busters, etc.  Just 30 minutes from LAX by shuttle or taxi or by a subway stop one-block from the hotel (yes LA has a subway), it is easily accessible.  Plan to join us for the Annual Difference Maker Awards Dinner on Friday, October 16th. We believe that this Fall conference will set GPSolo attendance records.  We are looking forward to seeing you in Los Angeles.

Dear ABA GPSolo Fall Conference Attendee Guests:

On behalf of the Division officers, James and I are excited about the 2009 Fall Meeting and National Solo & Small Firm Conference in Los Angeles, California and look forward to seeing you there.   If you are not already registered, please make sure your spouse, partner or significant other registers you, sooner rather than later, at:

2009 Fall Meeting and National Solo and Small Firm Conference

This Fall Meeting of the Division will go down in the history books as one of the best GPSolo meeting to date.  As you know, we are stepping back into old Hollywood as we are staying at the Millennium Biltmore, the original home of the Academy Awards.  This hotel is exceptionally grand.   Did you know that the Biltmore has been featured in over 200 movies!  See for yourself at:       http://www.millenniumhotels.com/millenniumlosangeles/index.html .  I’m told that the opening ceremony and reception at Remedy’s is going to be great, and that there will be enough food and drink to negate any need to go out for dinner.  Also, Remedy’s within easy walking distance -- only 3 blocks from the Biltmore.  Now, with the play list of programming at this meeting, your spouse, partner or significant other will be very busy with the Annual National Solo and Small Firm Conference, the inaugural Young Lawyers Institute, the outreach programs, etc.  With your registration, you are free to attend any of the day programs.  You are also invited to attend the Annual Difference Maker’s Awards Dinner in the historic Gold Ball Room in the Biltmore.  The dress for the Awards Dinner is Black Tie Optional, so break out that After 5!  Please make sure you have your ticket to this event – it will be a must see!

Public Service – please remember to bring educational gifts for needy children in East LA.  One of our Public Service projects involves Uncommon Good.  Uncommon Good is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure that the poor have access to quality education, health care and legal services. It provides mentoring and other services to low income children to help them break the cycle of poverty through successfully completing an education. Uncommon Good also sponsors young health professionals and lawyers who are devoting their careers to serving the poor.  The other Public Service Project involves the Birmingham Pledge Foundation.  The Birmingham Pledge Foundation is a grassroots effort to recognize the dignity and worth of every individual, by making a personal, daily commitment to remove prejudice from our own lives and to treat all people with respect

Friends, we are having two gatherings for breakfast on Friday and Saturday from 8:00 to 9:00 am.  I will be there to answer any of your concerns and to help guide you to enjoy this meeting and to enjoy all of what Los Angeles has to offer.  Speaking of which, please see attached a short list of sites and attractions available to you.  I did not list the beaches, but, considering that the temperature at the coast usually hovers in the low 70s in mid-October, you should be fine for great day at the beach.  Downtown Los Angeles is usually in the high 70s during mid-October.  Also, don’t forget Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm—just 40 minutes away.  I do hope you are considering bringing your kids!  If not, let’s gather in the Spa and at poolside—I hear it is fantastic!

Again, welcome and safe journey to historic Hollywood and the new Downtown Los Angeles!  I look forward to seeing you and your family.  You can contact me with any questions at kdurant57@hotmail.com or at 703.862/1078.

 Sincerely Yours,

Karen E. Durant
